Culture Games: What Do Major Sporting Events Tell Us About Society and Culture?

Professor
Mark Schuster (American Studies)
Description

American spectacles surrounding sports, athletes, fans and their hero(in)es have articulated an exhilarating and complex narrative of American culture. What role does athletics play in a college education? What do major sporting events tell us about our American identities, communities, culture and society? A variety of sport controversies will be examined such as steroid use, body fascism, violence, power, and the role of media and the NCAA in American athletics. Sport spaces, the intersections, and assumptions of class, ability, race, gender, and sexuality and social change will be scrutinized.
